Day Shade and Shelter (guest contributor)

Tournaments Illuminated Issue 184, Fourth Quarter 2012 had a Quest: to find out what most of us medieval enactors do for daytime shelter -shelter from the sumedieval maidenn, or for a nap, or even just a place to be – at our events.  What followed was a wide range of responses, ranging from “my household takes care of it” to “We don’t have to worry about sunburn in England”.  I hadn’t planned to answer the Quest, since I don’t have a day shade of my own, but the editor clarified that that was not a requirement.  I dashed down the requested 250 words on pretty short notice and sent it off.   Of all the responses, seven were chosen for publication.  I am proud to say they led with mine.

The only thing I would warn you about is that the text is light-colored and one’s initial impression is that it’ll be hard to read.  It isn’t, actually, though I did try to modify the text darker while I was copying it – you’ll see I wasn’t very successful.  Anyway, it’s not as hard to read as you might expect.
